Optimising Bicep Training . . As we approach the weekend most gym goers will be at some point training their arms. . . Any movement where you are trying to isolate the bicep will get a significant amount of tension from either locking down to form a stable base with your elbows supported or lying with your back supported on an incline bench. . . This will make the exercise harder but safer as it will take the load off the anterior delts (shoulders) and lower back, as this is quite common when a bicep curl is performed wrong (ego lifting/throwing weights around). Training to Tempo . . One training method that is sometimes not utilised when trying to get lean or improve training intensity and contractions is applying tempo to movements and exercises. . . If you’re struggling to feel the right muscle fibres working during an exercise then there’s a possibility you’re not contacting them well through load. . . If we were to add tempo to an exercise there would be four numbers: eccentric, isometric, concentric and second isometric. The number may look something like this 3121. . . The first number(eccentric) means the lowering phase where people are generally at their strongest. For example on a pulldown machine it would be mean as the bar was extending back into the top position. . . The second number(isometric) would mean a pause or where the weight could possibly stop or hold. Again an example on the pulldown would be when the arms are fully lengthened with load to create a stretch. . . The third number(concentric) would be the stress of load where we feel a good contraction. On the Pulldown this would be as the weight is driving down towards our clavicle. . . The last number(second isometric) would be a possible pause again. On a pulldown this would be in a bottom position where generally most people are at their weakest. . .
